BRIEF HISTORY OF ST. JOSEPH’S CONVENT, DARBE, PUTTUR.
(Patrao Hospital)
Sisters of St. Joseph of Tarbes (SJT)
After Vatican II for the first time in the History of the Congregation, sisters from India were sent for Nursing and Medical studies in 1963. Msgr. Antony Patrao gifted the hospital named after him to the Sisters of St. Joseph of Tarbes in the year 1971. The health condition of the people of this area was very poor. People were unaware of the basic hygiene and sanitation as a result communicable diseases and water borne diseases were very prevalent in this areas. To such milieu God called the Sisters of St. Joseph of Tarbes together with Fr. Patrao in the Diocese of Mangalore to serve the health needs of this area.
FOUNDATION
It was very providential that in the year 1966, the foundation stone of the hospital was laid by Late Cardinal Gracians, the Arch Bishop of Bombay that our founding Dr. Sr. Angelina was present who then was only a medical student. Mother Anne was the first Superior and it was a humble beginning. The local people were highly excited to receive the sisters and called them “Amchi Sistera” (Our Sisters). Mother Anne took great care to sow the noble seeds of love and concern for the sick and old people of this area. At present we have 26 sisters. It is a welcoming home for the sick and the aged sisters of our Province.
