1. Introduction:
The long silent dream of Late Msrg Antony Patrao a great visionary and Founder of all Catholic Educational Institutions in Puttur of Starting a hostel for women was awakened after about three decades in the mind of Rev. Fr. Fredrick Mascarenhas, the Principal of St. Philomena college in the year 1999.
The hostel was inaugurated on 30th June 2000, with the motto “Faith And Service” by admitting 144 students from I PUC to III Degree. It is owned by the Catholic Board of Education of the Diocese of Mangalore which is registered under the Societies Registration Act of 1860. From the time of its existence the sisters of St. Joseph of Tarbes have been rendering their service in the campus. The hostel has been gaining strength year by year. It provides board and lodging for PUC, Degree and Post Graduates. The hostel has earned much recognition not only in and around Puttur but also in the faraway places. It consists of students from different walks of life, different castes and different places. But inside the hostel the students belong to one family and look upon each other as one family members with filial love and concern.
The Women’s Hostel began with one main building consist of 60 living rooms which can be shared by 4 students, mess hall-1, kitchen room-1, store room-1, recreation room-1 small, auditorium-1, Chapel-1, kitchen workers residence room-2, Iron room-2, visitors room-1, wardens chamber and living room- 1+1, computer room-1, wash room with bathing facilities-16 in ground floor and 16 in 1st floor.
Because of the growing number of students in the year 2017 another building was constructed and was inaugurated on 28th July 2018 to accommodate the post graduates. It has 21 living rooms which can be shared by 4 students, 2 study rooms, staff residence room-1, wash rooms & bathing rooms-4 each in ground as well as on 1st floor.
‘Home away home’ – St Philomena College Women’s Hostel, located in St Philomena College campus, gives great importance for high standards of excellence in academic, sports and cultural activities. It is also known for its discipline, good morals, values of life and cleanliness.
2. Objective:
- To provide conducive environment for any ideal student to carry out her task at the best.
- To provide guidance and support for the all round development of personality of the students.
- To provide favourable environment to achieve the goal who reside as an inmate of the hostel.

14. INNOVATIONS & IMPROVEMENTS:
- Extension of PG Block.
- Interlocking the front yard and washing place.
- Generator facilities provided for students during power failure
- Solar electrical coil was installed for monsoon
- C.C. Camera is installed with 16 cameras
- New 16 cots were made for the rooms
- 04 dining tables were newly made and 40 stools were bought for the mess hall
- Arrangement of strings is made in open area for drying of clothes
- Newly installed steamer for the preparation of rice
- Renovation of garden with new pots
- Nourishment of coconuts trees with manure on timely basis
- New motor and pipes were installed for the Bore well
- Aqua guard is installed for improved drinking facilities.
- Double charge vitrified tiles to messhall,office room , porticos and passage
- Setting up of Internet browsing and Wi Fi Connection
Other renovation works under taken from 2020 August onwards to improve the facilities
- Purchase of new refrigerator for students kitchen
- Repair of solar water pipes and panels of Degree block
- Renovation ok kitchen room
- Fixing of iron sheets behind the building wall in order to protect the windows damaging from rain water.
- Replacement of shatter to the main entrance of the building
- Installation of new solar water system to Post Graduate block
- Replacement of roof and fixing inter lock near students washing and drying the cloths
- Replacement of electrical panel board
- Fixing the mosquito nets for the windows of both the buildings
- Repair of dining tables and study hall tables
- Painting of 1st floor of degree block
- Installation of new solar water system to degree block
- Painting of all the iron beds and the chairs
15. BEST PRACTICES:
- Systematic time-table followed by all the students.
- Dinner served early at 7.30 p.m. which proves to be healthy practice as per dieticians.
- For spiritual up-bringing of the inmates prayers are offered on events of festivals, examinations along with daily short prayer at 9 p.m.
- A healthy practice of waste segregation is undertaken which includes separation of dry and wet waste.
- Students celebrating their birthdays are wished in advance and specially prayed for.
- Different festivals are celebrated with due interest and respect to all religion which promote communal harmony and national integrity among inmates.
- Early rising and early going to bed which ensures a fresh atmosphere for students all through the day.
- Healthy and timely meals for inmates at subsidized rates further facilitates to a good health that involves no junk food.
- Enough recreation time is provided for the inmates which promotes a break from usual busy schedule.
- The infirmary room is kept a side whenever the inmates get sick and are given medical care.
16. Future plan:

- Degree block: -Replacement of tiles roofing to RCC-Tiles flooring
17. Conclusion:
St Philomena Women’s Hostel is a home away from home for all the students who find travelling difficulties. In addition to providing a secure residence for all the women students, the hostel also caters to mental, spiritual, physical and emotional up-liftment of the students. The history of the students who have been residing in the hostel gives us accurate check of the progress and merits of the hostel’s smooth functioning. With gratifying academic results, laurels in the field of sports, cultural and all other activities of the college, all those who have completed their studies in this institution are well placed in their jobs or higher studies. Some have secured jobs abroad. Thus the hostel proves to be the appropriate place to see to the academic and more importantly overall up-liftment of all the inmates of the hostel.
